Need for a New Facility

The original 'Porirua Recreation Centre' was opened in 1975, and was managed and maintained by the community with backing from Porirua City Council. In 1998, the community could no longer maintain this major focal point of Porirua and required the Council to take overall control.

During the early 2000's there was a growing demand from the community for a bigger facility, it was also becoming obvious that a major makeover was necessary. With the cost of replacing the roof among other required upgrades totalling in the millions, it was proposed that a new facility be built. Porirua City Council engaged architects Stephenson and Turner to prepare designs for a potential new complex. The final decision was put forward to the community and following public meetings, a proposal to build a new facility was approved. Building commenced in January 2008 and was completed in November 2008. The Grand Opening of the Arena was held on November 2008 with a gala dinner and performances, including Ben Makisi.

The Name 'Te Rauparaha'

The name Te Rauparaha Arena comes from the original great chief of Ngati Toa and leader of Ngati Raukawa - Te Rauparaha. In 1821 he played a prominent role in the migration of the Ngati Toa to the Kapiti Coast. Te Rauparaha was one of the Maori chiefs that signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

Read more about Te Rauparaha in the Heritage section on the Porirua City Council website.
